1. Undo the fixing bolts (1a) and remove the cylinder head (1b) and gasket (1c).
Refitting
For ground cylinder heads, it is necessary to correct any excess valve height. This operation requires the fitting of special undersize valves available as spares.
The nominal cylinder head height is 133 ± 0.05 mm; the maximum repair height is 132.6 ± 0.05 mm.
The flatness tolerance must be within 0.05 mm.
1. Measure the piston projection (1a) from the cylinder head gasket support plane using a dial guage and the tool (1b) following the instructions given below:
- place the piston in question at T.D.C.;
- bring the pointer in contact with the control point, shown in the diagram and zero the dial gauge;
- move the pointer on the engine block plane and take a reading for S1;
- bring the pointer in contact with the control point on the opposite side, shown in the diagram and zero the dial gauge;
- move the pointer on the engine block plane and take a reading for S2;
The piston projection in question is equal to the average value for the two readings
S = (S1 + S2) / 2
Repeat the above procedure for the remaining three pistons and check that the maximum difference between the projections is less than 0.07 mm.
1. Measure piston projection (1a) in two places 180° apart on the gudgeon pin centre line using the tool (1b) and take the average of the two values measured for each piston.
| Supporto comparatore | 1.870.404.000 | Sporgenza dal piano di appoggio testa cilindri | T.T |
1. Select the correct size cylinder head gasket depending on the maximum average projections for each individual piston.
the difference between the minimum and maximum values should not be more than 0.07 mm.
Select a new cylinder head gasket on the basis of the specified values.
The references indicate the oversize levels.
Keep the gasket sealed in its nylon bag and do not remove from its protection until ready to fit.
Do not lubricate the gasket or contaminate with oil or grease.

1. Refit the cylinder head gasket (1a) in its seat and centre it on the locating pins (1b).
Position the cylinder head on the cylinder block/crankcase.
It is essential to check the length of the retaining bolts. The nominal length is 131.5 mm; the maximum permitted length is 134 mm. If it is greater, replace the bolts.
1. Tighten the bolts securing the cylinder head to the cylinder block to the recommended torque following the order illustrated and using the angular tightening tool.
