MISFIRE ERROR

The diagnostic equipment signals the following error: Misfire

Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation

Connect the tester (Examiner or Examiner Plus) and transcribe the errors and environmental parameters

Check for '(General) Misfire' error only

'Upstream lambda probe' error presentSee table Z56 UPSTREAM LAMBDA SENSOR SIGNAL ERROR
'Mixture concentration' error presentSee table Z50 MIXTURE STRENGTH ERROR
The 'Misifre in cylinder X error is presentSee table Z54 MISFIRE ERROR IN ONE CYLINDER
The '(General) Misfire', 'Catalyzer and/or 'Downstream Lambda signal' errors only are presentContinue to Step 1
Other errors present

Identify and eliminate the cause of the anomaly.

Continue to Step 10

1CONTROL UNIT CIRCUIT CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation

Visually inspect the condition of the engine management control unit wiring, connections and earth.

No faults should be present

Continue to Step 2Faults in the control unit electrical circuit

Restore the correct connections See E5030 PETROL ENGINE ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT. If necessary, replace the components involved.

Continue to Step 10

2CHECKING FUEL PRESSUREAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fuel system pressure is correct Op. 0510C10Continue to Step 3Pressure not correct

Restore the correct pressure; if necessary, replace the faulty component.

Continue to Step 10

3CHECKING FUEL QUALITYAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the quality of the fuel, making sure that there is no water or other impuritiesContinue to Step 4Impurities are present

Clean the tank Op. 1040A10and introduce new fuel.

Continue to Step 10

4CHECKING INLET AND EXHAUST SYSTEM SEALAll OKProblems metOperation

Check the exhaust system; See Test 1072A

In particular, check that there are no leaks downstream of the MAP/flow meter sensor, also taking into consideration:

  • blow-by;
  • canister circuit;
  • brake servo vacuum pipes;
  • Injector O-Rings
Continue to Step 5Leaks are present

Restore the exhaust system seal and replace the affected parts if necessary

Continue to Step 10

5ENGINE PROBLEMS CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation

Check that there are no problems with the engine. In particular, check:

  • correct cylinder compression Op. 0510A10
  • correct engine timing Op. 0510A20
  • correct rpm sensor position
  • gap between rpm sensor and phonic wheel within permitted limits;
  • visually for absence of faults on phonic wheel, such as broken or chipped teeth
Continue to Step 8Engine timing incorrect

Ensure engine timing is correct Op. 1032B10

Continue to Step 6

Rpm sensor incorrectly positioned

Reposition the sensor correctly.

Continue to Step 6

Flywheel defective

Replace the flywheel Op. 1092A10

Continue to Step 6

Compression insufficientContinue to Step 7
6FLYWHEEL LEARNINGAll OKProblems metOperation
Carry out the flywheel learning procedureContinue to Step 10
7CHECKING CAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT COMPRESSIONAll OKProblems metOperation

Carry out R/R on head to check the valve seal

Check the condition of the cylinders/piston rings

Continue to Step 8Insufficient valve seal

Overhaul the cylinder head Op. 1016E10

Continue to Step 6

Cylinders/piston rings worn

Renew the seal.

Continue to Step 6

8KINEMATIC MECHANISM CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation

Check that the kinematic mechanism is not oscillating by road testing the vehicle. In particular:

  • clutch not jerking;
  • couplings/bearings not faulty;
  • engine mountings and supports not faulty;
  • suspension loading correct;
  • wheel balancing correct
Continue to Step 9Clutch jerking

Replace the clutch Op. 1810A20

Continue to Step 10

Anomalies in joints, bearings, blocks or mounts

Replace the components involved.

Continue to Step 10

Front suspension not loaded

Replace the shock absorber Op. 4410A12

Continue to Step 10

Wheels not balanced

Balance the wheels Op. 4450B54. Replace the faulty tyres if necessary

Continue to Step 10

9CHECK ERROR IN A SINGLE CYLINDERAll OKProblems metOperation
Connect the diagnostic equipment (Examiner or Examiner Plus) Check for the presence of 'Misfire at cylinder X errorError present in at least 1 cylinderSee table Z54 MISFIRE ERROR IN ONE CYLINDERreferring to the cylinders concerned
Error not present at a specific cylinderSee table Z54 MISFIRE ERROR IN ONE CYLINDERreferring to all cylinders in succession
10DELETING AND CHECKING ERRORAll OKProblems metOperation

Use a tester to cancel the errors in the control unit.

Carry out a road test and ensure the error does not recur

Continue to Step 11The fault persistsContinue to Step 0
11CHECKING CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosisFault persists
