ABS - DESCRIPTION

1.2 8v, 1.6 16v, 1.3 JTD 16V, 1.9 JTD 8V, 1.9 DIESEL · from 10/2000, up to 10/2000

Description

The electronic anti-lock brake system governs braking pressure sent to the wheels and prevents loss of grip under all tyre and road surface conditions.

The system is designed to complement the normal mechanical braking system and not to replace it. In this way it ensures effective safety in the case of anomalies: the ABS uses the same fluid as the conventional hydraulic braking system.

Four sensors fitted to the four wheels inform the electronic control unit of wheel speed at every moment. In this way, they detect wheel lock, wheel slip and loss of grip.

Under these conditions, the control unit sends specific instructions to solenoids that modulate hydraulic circuit pressure to eliminate lock and restore the car to within grip limits. This ensures the shortest possible stopping distance, without losing control of the steering.

Two adjustment solenoids (one for pressure charging, the other for pressure discharging) are fitted for each wheel.

The sensors are active, i.e. they consist of a receiver that faces a magnetic coding device built into the hub bearing. Under these conditions, the signal is less influenced by electromagnetic interference and temperature.

The control unit also controls brake force distribution over the rear axle and thus replaces the mechanical load proportioning valve used previously (EBD function: Electronic Brake Distribution).

The control unit is equipped with a self-diagnostic function: when an error occurs in the ABS system, a warning light is turned on and the system is simultaneously deactivated. Under these conditions, the car brakes using only the conventional system.

When the control unit detects an error in the EBD function, it simultaneously turns on the ''insufficient brake fluid level'' and ''handbrake on'' warning light as well as the ABS warning light.

Under these conditions, the rear brake distribution control is also deactivated and the car must be driven with great care.

The supply lines for the control unit and the various system components (sensors and actuators) are protected by a special maxifuse, located inside the engine compartment junction control unit.

The electronic antilock braking system regulates the braking pressure transmitted to the wheels, preventing them from losing grip whatever the tyre and road conditions.

The system is designed to complement the conventional mechanical braking system and not to replace it, thereby guaranteeing effective safety in the case of problems: the system operates using the same brake fluid as in the conventional mechanical brake circuit.

Four sensors, located on each of the four wheels, indicatae the speed of each wheel to the electronic control unit, recording any situations involving locking, slipping or loss of grip.

If these situations occur, the electronic control unit operates solenoid valves, which modulate pressure in the hydraulic circuit to prevent lock and restore the vehicle to permissible grip limits to ensure the shortest possible stopping distance without losing control of the steering.

Two regulation solenoids are fitted (a pressure charge solenoid and a pressure discharge solenoid) for each wheel.

The sensors are active type, i.e. they consist of a receiver that faces a magnetic encoder built into in the hub bearing: under these conditions, the signal is less influenced by electromagnetic interferenced and temperature.

In addition, the control unit manages distribution of the braking load over the rear axle to replace the mechanical load proportioning valve used previously (EBD function: Electronic Brake Distribution").

The control unit is equipped with an autodiagnostic function: when an error is detected in the ABS function, it turns on the associated warning light and simultaneously deactivates the system: under these conditions the vehicle is braked using only the conventional braking system.

When the control unit detects an error in the EBD function, it turns on the low brake fluid and handbrake warning light together with the ABS failure warning light.

Under these conditions, the rear brake distributor control is deactivated and the vehicle must be driven with great caution.

The power supply lines for the control unit and the various system components (sensors and actuators) are protected by two fuses located in the junction unit under the dashboard.
