ENGINE OIL LEAKS

2.2 JTS, 3.2 JTS

An engine oil leak can be seen with consequent dripping and/or fouling of the engine

0	PRELIMINARY CHECKS	All OK	Problems encountered	Operation
	Carry out an initial visual inspection to locate the component that is leaking or the area of the leak. If the visual inspection was not enough, wash the engine, dry it and spread talc on the parts involved: carry out a road test to identify the leak.	Move on to Step 1	Leak from the exhaust cap.	Move on to Step 1.
			Leak from the sump.	Move on to Step 2.
			Leak from the oil filter.	Move on to Step 3.
			Leak from the engine gaskets.	Move on to Step 4.
1	DRAIN PLUG CHECK	All OK	Problems encountered	Operation
	Check the condition and seal of the oil drain plug.	Move on to Step 2	Drain plug not intact.	Replace the drain plug Op. 1020A30 ENGINE OIL DRAIN PLUG - REPLACE
	Check the condition and seal of the oil drain plug.	Move on to Step 2	Exhaust cap tightening not correct.	Restore the correct exhaust cap tightening.
2	OIL SUMP CHECK	All OK	Problems encountered	Operation
	Check: - the condition of the oil sump; - the seal of the sealant between the sump and cylinder block/crankcase; - that the sump fixing bolts are correctly tightened.	Move on to Step 3	Oil sump damaged or distorted.	Replace the sump Op. 1020A20 CRANKCASE OIL SUMP - R.R CLEAN SURFACES FOR SEALANT APPLICATION
			Incorrect tightening of retaining bolts.	Restore the correct tightening of the retaining bolts.
			3	OIL FILTER CHECK	All OK	Problems encountered	Operation
	Check: - the condition of the oil filter; - the seal and condition of the seal; - the condition of the water-oil heat exchanger	Move on to Step 4	Oil filter damaged or distorted.	Replace the oil filter and seal
		Move on to Step 4	Oil leaks from the heat exchanger.	Replace the heat exchanger Op. 1084C10 ENGINE OIL HEAT EXCHANGER - R + R
4	ENGINE GASKET CHECK	All OK	Problems encountered	Operation
	Access the crankshaft and camshaft oil seals. Check the seal of these gaskets.	End of diagnosis	Crankshaft seals damaged.	Replace the seals concerned.
		End of diagnosis	Camshaft seals damaged	Replace the seals concerned.
