ELECTRIC STEERING - Functional description

Functional description

The electric power steering control unit M86 monitors and controls the entire electric driving system electrically.

The control unit is supplied directly by the battery via a line protected by fuse F2 of the engine compartment junction unit B1 at pin A of connector A of M86. Pin B of connector A of M86 is earthed.

The supply controlled by the ignition (15/54) reaches pin 1 of connector B of M86 from the line protected by fuse F24 of the engine compartment junction unit B1.

Control unit M86 is connected to the CAN network - pins 2, 3, 7 and 8 of connector B with the other nodes, particularly Body Computer Node M1 and instrument panel E50, to which the signals for the 'DUALDRIVE failure' warning light are sent.

The CITY mode (less effort to turn the wheel) selection button is located in the control panel in the centre of the dashboard H90 and is connected to control unit M86 via the CAN network throgh Body Computer M1, pin 19 of connector D.

Self-diagnostic data can be read by connecting the unit to connector C of Body Computer M1 - pin 11 of connector H: this receives signals from pin 4 of connector B of M86 See E8010 DIAGNOSTIC MULTIPLE CONNECTOR.
