ELECTRIC STEERING - Description

Description

The Electrical Power Steering (EPS) system reduces the effort required to steer the car by using the torque produced by an electric motor.

An electronic control unit manages and controls the system: by processing the incoming information and using a preset operating logic the control unit determines the direction of rotation and the supply current for the electric motor producing the desired power-assisted effect.

It is possible, using the special CITY button located in the control panel in the centre of the dashboard,to alter the level of power assistance for the electric steering.

On the instrument panel, there is the electric power steering fault warning light; The special 'fault' warning light comes on if there is a problem with the system.

The control unit supply lines are protected by a special maxifuse located in the engine bay control unit. ignition-operated power supply from a special fuse in the engine compartment control unit.

a sensor which detects the position of the steering wheel (steering sensor used by the ABS system for the ESP function) is incorporated in the electric steering control unit See E7023 ESP.
