INTRODUCTION - ENGINE
WARNING
All the operations should be carried out taking great care to avoid personal injury.
The engine compartment contains many moving parts, components at high temperatures and live wires. Follow the warnings given below very carefully when working in the engine compartment.
- Switch off the engine and wait for it to cool down.
- No smoking.
- No naked flames.
- Make sure that there is a fire extinguisher nearby.
The use of special Fiat tools is required for certain procedures. The use of these tools is vital for working in safety.
Follow the current workshop safety regulations. Where necessary, the Manual contains specific procedures to be followed to prevent dangerous situations from arising.
For the use of chemical products follow the safety instructions on the card from the supplier to the consumer (for Italy in accordance with D.M. No. 47/1992).
WARNINGS
All the operations should be carried out taking great care to avoid damage to components.
To release parts that are sticking, tap gently using an aluminium or lead hammer if iron materials are involved; use a wooden or resin hammer for light alloy parts.
When dismantling, check that components that should be marked have the appropriate references.
When refitting, lubricate the parts, where necessary, to prevent seizing during the initial operating period.
When refitting it is vital to follow the tightening torques and adjustment data.
Each time they are refitted, replace gaskets, oil seals, flexible washers, circlips, self-locking nuts and all parts that have deteriorated.

Do not start up the engine when the terminals for the electrical connections are badly connected or slack at the battery poles.
Before carrying out the removing-refitting of any of the CNG system components, always close the manual cut out valves on the canisters to prevent the escape of any methane.
To release parts that are sticking, tap gently using an aluminium or lead hammer if iron materials are involved; use a wooden or resin hammer for light alloy parts.
When dismantling, check that components that should be marked have the appropriate references.

Before carrying out the removal and refitting of any of the CNG system components, follow the safety instructions and drain the system as described in the special procedures.
Personnel should follow the laws in force and take care to adhere to all safety recommendations. The standards listed below must be observed during any operation carried out on a vehicle equipped with a CNG system.
In particular, when opening connectors or moving pressurised components, operators must be equipped with helmets with face visors to UNI-EN 166 standards to protect against spray and winter gloves to UNI-EN 388 and UNI-EN 511 standards to protect their hands against frostbite due to the heat absorbed by the expanding methane.
The system used on the Multipla Bipower/Blupower meets requirements in the individual countries where it is marketed.
There are 4 solenoid valves (one solenoid valve for the canister and one on the pressure reduction unit) which insulate the two sections of supply pipe when the petrol mode fuel system is selected or with the engine switched off.
There is a manual methane cut out tap on each solenoid valve on the canisters and when it is opened/closed this either allows or prevents the outlet or inlet of methane from the canister; it is advisable to shut the manual tap on each individual canister each time the vehicle is not used for a long period, transported on a carrier or moved in an emergency situation as a result of a breakdown or accident.
Despite the presence of these devices, it must be remembered that mehtane is still a gas under ambient conditions and is very flammable; always observe the following warnings when leaks are potentially present and during any service operations on the system.
- do not smoke
- do not use naked flames
- do not use driers and power tools
- do not use incandescent lamps
- do not wear acrylic clothing that generates static electricity
- because different material types are used to make the CNG system, potential differences may arise that generate electrostatic charges. For this reason, discharge any electrostatic charges as follows before working on each system component. disconnect the negative and positive battery terminals; join the two battery terminals using a cable; connect the vehicle to ground; in this way, any electrostatic charges that may be produced will be discharged.
- do not use the following workshop equipment: air compressors, current generators, suction devices, power tools etc. that could generate sparks and thus trigger explosions in the case of leaks
- do not use any type of suction tool
- always work in a well ventilated environment
- do not take vehicles with methane gas systems into closed environments if they been in an accident or if the condition of the system seals is unknown.
The Multipla Bipwer/Blupower is equipped with a high pressure methane system, designed to operate at 200 bar. It is dangerous to force the system to run at higher pressures. Do not modify either the methane system configuration or components; they have been designed exclusively for the Fiat Multipla. The use of other components or materials could cause malfunctions and prejudice safety. if the vehicle is placed in a drying oven after painting at a temperature greater than 80°C, the methane canisters must be removed from the vehicle.
After having removed one or more of the CNG high or low pressure system components, use the leak detector equipment or a foam solution to search for any leaks as described in the special procedure and repair any damaged components
.
The system used on the Fiat Multipla meets requirements in the individual countries where it is marketed.
One-way valves are fitted to the tank at the inlets for the LPG pipes from the filler fitting and the return pipe from the injector. These prevent gas accidentally emerging from the tank.
The solenoid valves located: one on the tank near the supply pipe and one on the pressure regulator, insulate both sections of the supply pipe when the petrol fuel mode is selected or when the engine is off.
The one-way valve on the filler fitting prevents the LPG in the filler pipe from returning to the outside.
Despite the presence of these devices, it must be remembered that LPG is still a gas under environmental conditions and thus can easily explode. Always observe the following warnings when leaks are potentially present and during any service operations on the system.
- do not smoke.
- do not use naked flames.
- do not use driers and power tools.
- do not use incandescence lamps.
- do not wear acrylic clothing that generates static electricity.
- always disconnect the battery terminals.
- when the vehicle is in the workshop, do not park near inspection pits, intake port drainage wells or any closed area without sufficient ventilation. Danger of explosion: LPG is heavier than air and tends to sink to the lowest possible level. It will therefore fill any openings near the vehice to create dangerous, potentially explosive gas pockets.
- do not use the following workshop equipment: air compressors, current generators, suction devices, power tools etc. that could generate sparks and thus trigger explosions in the case of leaks.
- do not use any type of suction device; always work in ventilated areas.
- do not take vehicles with LPG systems into closed environments if they been in an accident or if the condition of the system seals is unknown.
- if the vehicle goes into a drying oven after painting, at temperatures in excess of 80°C, the LPG control unit and the LPG tank must be removed from the actual vehicle (remove both tanks in the case of the dual tank option).
