INTRODUCTION - REAR SUSPENSION

INTRODUCTION

The McPherson independent rear suspension has been carefully designed to work in a balanced manner with the front quadrilateral suspension, while maintaining the characteristics of reduced bulk and simplicity.

CONSTRUCTION FEATURES

The suspensioin consists of a box section crossmember on which the transversal track control arms are hinged. The hub is hinged to the other end of the transversal arms. The shock absorbers are attached to the hub and the two longitudinal arms which, at the opposite end are secured to the body, are hinged to it.

The torsion bar is mounted on the frame by means of suitable supports. This bar is connected directly to the shock absorbers by means of links with balljoints.

The general geometry of the suspension allows the following:

  • to increase the negative camber of the rolling wheel;
  • to position the rolling centre correctly in relation to that of the front suspension.

With the following advantages:

  • improving grip on bends
  • optimizing overall car balance.

The different length of the transversal arms and the characteristics of the bushes which hinges them to the suspension permit the following:

  • the wheel to be moved longitudinally backwards, to better absorb any obstacles, without induced steering effects.

With the advantage of:

  • maintaining maximum directional stability both on straight lines and round bends;
  • increasing promptness and smoothness of the steering response;
  • increasing stability and self-aligning capacity of the car under extreme conditions.

The mounting position of the shock absorbers on the bodywork, shifted towards the outside of the car, has enabled a very large and useful luggage compartment to be obtained.
