ELECTRIC STEERING - DESCRIPTION
Description
The servo assistance is ensured by an electric motor located in the area of the dashboard which transfers the torque produced directly to a toothed wheel coaxial to the steering column.
The input torque supplied by the driver is "read" by a mechanical sensor that is extremely sensitive and precise.
The driver can chose between two driving programmes (City and Normal) that can be selected using the button in the dashboard. The first ensures maximum comfort during parking manoeuvres, with minimum effort on the steering wheel. The second provides an average peformance whilst parking but allows excellent progressiveness if steering wheel effort, even at low speeds, especially in poor road grip conditions. Both programmes provide assistance that is variable depending on the speed of the vehicle (gradual power assistance) without a compromise between peformance when parking and the quality of steering control whilst driving.
The electronic control unit also contains different sets of City/Normal programmes in its memory which are automatically selected depending on the engine type (the information is communicated by the body computer). The servo assistance can be adapted to the weight of the vehicle
The power supply to the electric steering control unit is protected by specific fuses housed inside the engine compartment junction unit.
Functional description
The electric steering control unit M086 receives the direct battery supply at connector A pin A, from the line protected by fuse F05. From pin B of the same connector, it is connected directly to the battery earth A001 connector C.
The supply controlled by the ignition is received at pin 1 connector B, from the line protected by fuse F24.
The electric steering control unit M086, is connected to the body computer node M001 See E1050 CAN CONNECTION LINES from pins 5, 10 connector B, via the CAN network..
Functional description
The signals acquired by the electric steering guide M086 are:
- vehicle speed: the signal is supplied by the speedometer sensor K084 and is used by the control unit to stiffen or power assist the steering in accordance with the vehicle speed;
Functional description
The signals acquired by the electric steering guide M086 are:
- vehicle speed: the signal is supplied by the ABS control unit (seeSee E7020 ABS) and is used by the control unit to stiffen or power assist the steering depending on the speed of the vehicle;
Functional description
The signals acquired by the electric steering guide M086 are:
- switching on the engine: the signal is supplied by the alternator ('D+' signal) to confirm that the engine has startedSee E5010 STARTING AND RECHARING;
- switching on 'City' function: the signal is sent by the specific switch housed in the controls panel H090;
The electric steering control unit M086 controls the switching on of the 'system fault' warning light, contained in the instrument panel E050, sending the command to the body computer node M001 via the B-CAN.
The electric steering control unit is connected to the diagnostic socket R010 See E8010 DIAGNOSTIC MULTIPLE CONNECTOR from pin 4, connector B.
Earth C020 is located on the passenger compartment floor and located near the right front wheel arch (footwell).
