REAR NOISE (KNOCKING)
Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, there is knocking coming from the rear suspension. This diagnosis can only be made after
See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING
Carry out the latter first.
If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any operations on the appropriate side only.
| Test results | ||||
| 0 | PRELIMINARY CHECKS | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Having carried out the road test, during the See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING there was a knocking noise from the back. Continue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occurs. | End of diagnosis | The noise disappears when the brake pedal is operated. | Restore the correct tightening of the rear brake calipers to the stub axle | |
| The noise only occurs during acceleration or braking | Move on to Step 1 | |||
| The noise is also present in other conditions | Move on to Step 1 | |||
| 1 | OIL LEAKS CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Raise the vehicle on a two column lift and check that there are no oil leaks from the shock absorber stem. the check on the shock absorber should only be carried out after driving on a dry road, slight dampness of the stem is considered normal since this is due to evaporation that takes place during the operation of the shock absorber. If there is a persistent oil leak on the shock absorber stem, make sure that it is not coming from other parts of the vehicle that are lubricated | Move on to Step 2 | Leaks from other parts that are lubricated | Search for the cause of the leak following the appropriate diagnostic procedure | |
| Leaks from the shock absorber stem | Replace the shock absorber | |||
| 2 | HANDBRAKE CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
| Check that the handbrake cables or outer casing do not knock against the fuel tank, heat shields or bodywork during oscillations. | Move on to Step 3 | Inteference between outer casing or cables and other elements | Cover the outer casing with foam rubber tape in the area of the interference or lubricate the cable | |
| 3 | INTERFERENCE CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Check that there are no signs of interference between the suspension elements or between the latter and the bodyshell. In particular, check that there are no signs of wear on the suspension springs and that they do not show signs of abrasion. If the spring shows signs of abrasion, its mechanical properties could be weakened as a result of oxidation. | Move on to Step 4 | Inteference due to incorrect fitting. | Eliminate the interference and restore the correct fastening. If this is not possible, replace the defective components | |
| Abrasions or non conformity of the spring | Replace the spring taking care to fit it correctly | |||
| 4 | TIGHTENING TORQUE CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Locate the area of the possible noise source: top or bottom. Starting from the area where the knocking was identified, check See Test 4420OB CHECK ON CORRECT TIGHTENINGS FOR REAR SUSPENSION the tightening torques of the non-yield point type fixing bolts: - the shock absorber shim; - the lower mounting of the shock absorber to the longitudinal track control arm; - the transverse plate to the longitudinal arm; - the bracket fastening the longitudinal arm to the body; - the fastening for the bush to the longitudinal arm; - the anti-roll bar to the crossmember; - the connecting rod to the bar and to the longitudinal arm; - the camber rod to the steering knuckle; (only for the 2.2 JTS) - the rear fastening of the longitudinal arm to the steering knuckle; (only for the 3.2 V6 engine) - the rear differential fastening to the crossmember; - the brake caliper to steering knuckle; - the brake disc guard to the steering knuckle; - the steering knuckle to the hub. Visually inspect that the yield point type bolts have not loosened, the list is given below: - the shock absorber bracket to the bodyshell; - the camber rod to the crossmember; - the transverse plate to the crossmember; - the longitudinal arm bush to the mounting bracket on the bodyshell; - the front fastening for the longitudinal arm to the steering knuckle; - the crossmember to the bodyshell. | Move on to Step 5 | Non-shear bolts not tightened to torque | Restore the correct tightness | |
| Shear bolts loosened | Replace the shear bolts and restore the correct tightness | |||
| 5 | CAMBER ROD CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Check that there is no clearance between the camber rod and the crossmember or between the camber rod and the steering knuckle. Also check the condition of the crossmember bush. | Move on to Step 6 | There is clearance or the crossmember side fastening bush is not intact | Replace the camber rod checking the correct camber values Op. 4450A40 REAR WHEEL GEOMETRY - CHECK USING OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDES ADJUSTMENT IF NECESSARY | |
| 6 | TRANSVERSE PLATE CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Check that there is no clearance at the mounting of the plate on the crossmember. Also check the condition of the bush fastened to the crossmember. | Move on to Step 7 | There is clearance or the bush is not intact. | Replacement of longitudinal arm complete with transverse plate and bodyshell mounting bracket, in accordance with the Op. 4420B10 L/H OR R/H REAR SUSPENSION WISHBONE (ONE) - R+R checking the toe-in values are correct Op. 4450A40 REAR WHEEL GEOMETRY - CHECK USING OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDES ADJUSTMENT IF NECESSARY | |
| 7 | LONGITUDINAL ARM CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Check at the longitudinal track control arm that: - there is no clearance between the bush and the mounting bracket on the bodyshell; - there are no glycol leaks (fluid inside the hydraulic bush) at the bush fastened to the bodyshell. | Move on to Step 8 | There is no clearance between the bush and the mounting bracket on the bodyshell.
| Glycol leaks from the bush fastening the longitudinal arm to the bodyshell. | Replacement of longitudinal arm complete with transverse plate and bodyshell mounting bracket, in accordance with the Op. 4420B10 L/H OR R/H REAR SUSPENSION WISHBONE (ONE) - R+R checking the toe-in values are correct Op. 4450A40 REAR WHEEL GEOMETRY - CHECK USING OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDES ADJUSTMENT IF NECESSARY | |||
| 8 | REAR STUB AXLE CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Check that there is no clearance between the stub axle and the longitudinal arm and between the stub axle and the camber rod. Also check the condition of the stub axle bushes. | Move on to Step 9 | There is clearance or the bushes are not intact. | Replacement of rear stub axle, in accordance with checking the toe-in values are correct Op. 4450A40 REAR WHEEL GEOMETRY - CHECK USING OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDES ADJUSTMENT IF NECESSARY | |
| 9 | ANTI-ROLL BAR CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
After having disconnected the lower track rod end for the rod connected to the longitudinal track control arm, check that the anti-roll bar does not come down quickly. Also check that there are no signs of wear or tears on the connecting rod boots. | Move on to Step 10 | The anti-roll bar comes down quickly. | Replace the anti-roll bar | |
| Signs of wear or tears on the connecting rod boots. | Replace the connecting rod | |||
| 10 | SHOCK ABSORBER PLATE TIGHTENING TORQUE CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
When the luggage compartment interior lining side panels are removed following the Op. 7040B18 LOAD COMPARTMENT LOAD PLATFORM SIDE TRIM ONE LH OR RH - R.R Check the tightening torques for the following bolts: - fastening of the shock absorber buffer plate; Check that the buffer plate is fitted correctly See Test 4420AG CHECK ON CORRECT FITTING OF SHOCK ABSORBER BUFFER PLATE | Move on to Step 11 | Torque tightenings not correct | Restore the correct tightening. | |
| Plate not correctly fitted | Refit the plate correctly | |||
| 11 | CHECK ON MATCHING OF SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNTING TO ALUMINIUM SUPPORT ON TURRET | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
The left and/or right wheel must be removed to carry out this check then check: - that the mounting and support are correctly matched; - the condition of the shock absorber mounting. | Move on to Step 12 | Matching between mounting and support not correct | Restore the correct matching | |
| Rubber detached from the metal parts of the mounting | Replace the mounting | |||
| 12 | CHECK ON CORRECT OPERATION | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
| Check that the fault is no longer present | End of diagnosis | The fault persists | The knocking is caused by another system (e.g. the fuel float in the tank). Carry out the appropriate checks to identify the cause of the noise. | |
