REAR NOISE (CREAKING/SQUEAKING/TICKING)
Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, there is creaking coming from the rear suspension. This diagnosis can only be made after
See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING
. Carry out the latter first.
If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any operations on the appropriate side only.

| 0 | PRELIMINARY CHECKS | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Having carried out the road test, during the See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING , there was a creaking noise from the rear. Continue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occurs | End of diagnosis | The noise only occurs whilst moving | Move on to Step 1 | |
| 1 | DUST COVER CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Position the vehicle on a two column lift and raise it. Check that the dust cover is correctly attached and is not rubbing against the spring or the shock absorber casing, by moving it and applying pressure and releasing it above the shock absorber casing | Move on to Step 2 | It is released. | Check the possibility of reattaching the cover, otherwise replace the end of travel buffer. | |
| There is rubbing | Replace the end of travel buffer | |||
| 2 | CHECKS UNDER THE FLOOR | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Check that there are no pipes, handbrake cable or heat shields under the floor that are producing noise. Also check that springs on the layout brackets are not a source of noise | Move on to Step 3 | Pipes or heat shields incorrectly fastened | Renew the correct fastening | |
| Handbrake cable noisy | Lubricate the handbrake cable | |||
| Springs or rubber mountings damaged | Replace the faulty components | |||
| 3 | CAMBER ROD BUSHES CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
| Check that there are no signs of deterioration (contact/rubbing) on the crossmember, for the camber rod bushes | Move on to Step 4 | Bushes deteriorated | Replace the camber rod checking the correct camber values Op. 4450A40 REAR WHEEL GEOMETRY - CHECK USING OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDES ADJUSTMENT IF NECESSARY | |
| 4 | TRANSVERSE PLATE BUSH CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
| Check that there are no signs of deterioration (contact/rubbing) on the bush fastening the transverse plate to the crossmember. | Move on to Step 5 | Bush deteriorated. | Replacement of longitudianl arm complete with transverse plate and bodyshell mounting bracket, in accordance with the Op. 4420B10 L/H OR R/H REAR SUSPENSION WISHBONE (ONE) - R+R checking the toe-in values are correct Op. 4450A40 REAR WHEEL GEOMETRY - CHECK USING OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDES ADJUSTMENT IF NECESSARY | |
| 5 | LONGITUDINAL ARM BUSHES CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Check that there is no deterioration/rubbing of the bush on the mounting bracket securing the arm to the bodyshell. Check that there is no deterioration/rubbing of the front and rear bushes fastening the longitudinal arm to the steering knuckle. | Move on to Step 6 | Bush deteriorated. | Replacement of longitudinal arm complete with bodyshell mounting bracket, in accordance with the Op. 4420B10 L/H OR R/H REAR SUSPENSION WISHBONE (ONE) - R+R restoring the correct toe in values Op. 4450A40 REAR WHEEL GEOMETRY - CHECK USING OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDES ADJUSTMENT IF NECESSARY | |
| Bushes deteriorated | Replacement of rear stub axle checking the toe-in values are correct Op. 4450A40 REAR WHEEL GEOMETRY - CHECK USING OPTICAL EQUIPMENT, INCLUDES ADJUSTMENT IF NECESSARY | |||
| 6 | CHECKS ON ANTI-ROLL BAR | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Check that there are no faults with the anti-roll bar See Test 4420CA CHECKS ON REAR ANTI-ROLL BAR More specifically: - correct positioning of anti-roll bar in relation to the vehicle centre-line; of the bar is centered, check for any signs of mounting/bar sliding; - paint not worn at the points where the bar and the crossmember come into contact; - condition of centre flexible mountings in the contact area with the bar; - presence of grease in the boots for the connecting rod between the bar and the longitudinal arm; - fastenings to torque between bar and crossmember; - fastenings to torque between bar and longitudinal arm connecting rod. Check, after loosening the longitudinal arm, through a rotary movement, that there is no seizing/excessive clearance for both joints for the rod connecting the bar to the longitudinal arm. | Move on to Step 7 | Torque tightenings not correct. | Restore the correct tightening. | |
| Incorrect positioning of bar in relation to vehicle centre line. | Replace the anti-roll bar | |||
| Paint worn at the contact points (rubbing between anti-roll bar and crossmember). | Replace the anti-roll bar | |||
| Signs of tearing or damage to the flexible mountings. | Replace the anti-roll bar | |||
| Signs of seizing /excessive clearance for the connecting rod joints. | Replace the connecting rod | |||
| 7 | SPRING/SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY CHECK | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Also check that the positioning and the fitting of the semi-corner assembly (spring-shock absorber assembly) is correct. Check the condition of the spring lower rubber seal and the rubber coating for the upper shim. Check that there are no signs of rubbing on the suspension spring at its supports. Also check that the spring shows no signs of interference. If the spring shows signs of abrasion, its mechanical properties could be weakened as a result of oxidation. | Move on to Step 8 | Semi corner units incorrectly positioned or fitted. | Restore the correct fitting/positioning of the components. The correct fitting (of the spring-shock absorber assembly) should be carried out positioning the two cusps (arranged at 180°) of the mounting parallel to the fastening axis of the shock absorber to the longitudinal arm. | |
| Signs of tearing on the rubberized shims. | Replace the components making sure that they are correctly position (spring in contact with the lower plate projection). | |||
| Signs of interference on the spring. | Replace the shock absorber spring and the lower seal if damaged. | |||
| 8 | CHECKS ON THE SHOCK ABSORBER BUFFER PLATE | All OK | Problems encountered | Operation |
Following the Op. 7040B18 LOAD COMPARTMENT LOAD PLATFORM SIDE TRIM ONE LH OR RH - R.R remove the luggage compartment interior lining side panels, check: - that the noise is not caused by the movement of the shock absorber buffer plate; - that the buffer plate is fitted in the correct position See Test 4420AG CHECK ON CORRECT FITTING OF SHOCK ABSORBER BUFFER PLATE | End of diagnosis | The buffer plate is loose. | Tighten the upper nut to torque so that the buffer plate does not move any more. | |
| The buffer plate is not fitted correctly. | Refit the buffer plate correctly. | |||
