WARNINGS
Steering lock
Since no mechanical key is present, the steering lock function is performed electrically via the steering lock node.
The steering lock node releases the steering when the ignition-operated services are activated. INT, i.e. when a known TEG is identified in the TEG Reader
The locking of the steering by the steering lock node takes place when the TEG is extracted from the TEG Reader
In the event of emergency TEG removal, the steering is NOT locked. Similarly, if the TEG is removed when the vehicle speed is greater than 4 km, the steering is NOT locked.
If the battery is disconnected, the Steering Lock Node remains in the condition (unlocked or locked) that it is in: during workshop operations and repairs, whenever it is necessary to turn the steering wheel with the battery disconnected, leave the TEG inserted when the battery is disconnected. The steering will therefore remain released and free to turn.
This vehicle is equipped with a starting system known as Smart-Key where the traditional ignition key has been replaced with an electronic key "T.E.G." (Transmitter for Entry and Go) combined with an electronic key reader and TEG-Reader radio frequency receiver.
Access to the vehicle through radiofrequency recognition of the remote control incorporated in the TEG is entirely the same as what takes place with the traditional remote control incorporated in the key fob.
The vehicle is not switched on/started up by inserting the key in the ignition switch (which is no longer present) and turning it but by inserting the TEG in the TEG Reader and activating the START/STOP button.
The distribution of the power supply to the vehicle (ignition-controlled INT, INT/A, AVV, etc.) is managed by the steering lock node and takes place in entirely the same way as for models equipped with a traditional key.
The following documentation often still uses the expressions Key ON, Key OFF, ignition-operated power supply (INT) or key to MAR, key to STOP, key to AVV. These must be interpreted in accordance with the following summary table:
| Key ON | TEG inserted in TEG Reader |
| Key OFF | TEG removed from TEG Reader |
| ignition controlled power supply (INT) | TEG inserted into TEG Reader |
| key on MAR | TEG inserted in TEG Reader |
| key on STOP | TEG removed from TEG Reader |
| key on AVV | TEG inserted and START/STOP button pressed |
To prevent serious damage to the electrical and electronic components, never try and start the engine with the battery earth lead slack.
Never pull the leads or wiring using force because this would result in the cables being disconnected from the connectors or terminals.
Disconnect all the control units and electronic devices when carrying out arc welding operations on the bodyshell.
Before replacing a fuse, check that the circuit protected is not faulty.
When replacing fuses, make sure that the new fuse is the correct amperage. Do not use fuses that have a higher or lower amperage than required.
PRECAUTIONS
When working on electrical components always follow the precautions described below very carefully:
- Remove rings, wrist watches and other metal objects.
- Take care over electrical arcs: Even if the voltage is 12V, the battery can produce high currents if there is a short circuit, creating arcs or sparks that can be dangerous to the mechanic or create a fire hazard;
- Take care over high voltages. The electronic ignition system produces voltages of 20,000V and more which could be very dangerous. Take great care when working on or near these components.
- Prevent fire risks. Do not smoke when working close to the battery or components which get hot during usage (e.g. halogen bulbs) or in the area of the engine compartment when the engine is still hot.
Before working on the electrical system (connectors, electrical components, wiring etc.), always DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.
If the battery is disconnected the Steering Lock Node remains in the condition (unlocked or locked) that it is in: during workshop operations and repairs, whenever it is necessary to turn the steering wheel with the battery disconnected, leave the TEG inserted when the battery is disconnected. The steering will therefore remain released and free to turn.
INITIALISIATION PROCEDURE FOR DOOR NODES
Following a power supply failure to the control units (for example, battery disconnection) the system must be initialized once again following the instructions below, working with the ignition key ON (TEG inserted) and the doors and windows closed.
- completely open the driver''s door window, keeping the operating button pressed for at least 3 seconds after the (lower) end of travel position
- completely close the driver''s door window, keeping the operating button pressed for at least 3 seconds after the (upper) end of travel position
- carry out the same operations for the passenger window
- make sure that the initialization is correct by checking that the windows work properly in automatic mode
