About Land Rover

The Rover Company created the Land Rover name in 1948 for a utilitarian four-wheel-drive vehicle. The upmarket Range Rover followed in 1970 and the Discovery in 1989. Land Rover was later owned by BMW and then Ford, and since 2008 it has been part of Jaguar Land Rover under India's Tata Motors.

Good to know

• Until the Freelander of 1997, every Land Rover and Range Rover used a separate boxed-section chassis frame.
• The third-generation Range Rover (L322, 2002) used BMW's 4.4-litre V8 (M62) at first; the BMW X5 (E53) shares parts with it, such as hill descent control.
• The Discovery was based on the original Range Rover and sold in North America as the LR3 and LR4 from its third generation.
